Giraffe crossing the red soiled road in Tsavo East
This was a family holiday with just a short safari to Tsavo East. We also explored the reef at Diani Beach south of Mombassa, which was full of exotic creatures. Mohammed a local guide, pictured below, was very helpful finding these. We had some scary moments chest deep in water carrying the expensive camera equipment – perhaps we should invest in a waterproof compact for future trips.

Tsavo East is a couple of hours drive from Mombassa, around 20 km of the road is poor but this is quickly passed. The reserve is excellent for large herds of elephant and giraffe. The beautiful red soil gives the elephants their unusual red colour, making them even easier to spot. While the “big five” are all at Tsavo, these are more likely to be seen at the Masai Mara. Tsavo has over 600 bird species – look out for colourful kingfishers, bee eaters and raptors such at Bateleur Eagles, kite and goshawk. Tsavo also has some stunning scenery and is excellent for landscape shots showing animals in their habitat.
